Commercial Concrete Tank

Commercial Water Tanks in Victoria and NSW

Next Gen’s Concrete Tanks for commercial properties are designed to handle and store the water supply needs of modern businesses, companies, and commercial properties.

In addition to providing a steady supply of water, they are constructed with various features to ensure that the stored water remains fresh and free from pollutants.

Meeting the water demand of commercial properties and businesses

Durable / robust construction

The dense, fine-grain, cement-rich mortar of the Next Gen Concrete Tank provides a highly alkaline environment that inhibits corrosion. In addition, its use of top-quality and industrial-grade fittings ensures that your tank has a long, maintenance-free life.

Next Gen’s concrete tank has a remarkably strong roof, making it suitable for a variety of applications and locations, such as in alpine areas where snow loadings are high. In areas with limited space, the roof can be used as a storage or stacking platform. When the tank is backfilled to roof height, the roof can serve as a hardstand or parking area.

Complies with current regulations

The construction process of Next Gen’s commercial concrete tanks involves creating detailed and thorough specifications and drawings, which are ready for council approval. Each design complies with the relevant sections of the following codes:

  • Australian Standard 3600 -2001″Concrete Structures”
  • Australian Standard AS 3735 -2001 “Concrete Structures for Retaining Liquids”

Did you know that the Next Gen Concrete Tank can be backfilled to create a lower landscaping profile or even buried out of sight altogether?

The strengthened floor and roof of the Next Gen Concrete Tank permit backfill and burying up to a depth of 300 millimetres over the roof.

Frequently asked questions

Concrete is measured in cubic metres (m3), and it weighs around 2,400kg per cubic metre. A cubic metre of 32MPA concrete consists of around 350kg of cement, 700kg of sand, 1,200kg of aggregate (rock), and 150l of water.

MPA stands for megapascal, a metric measurement for pressure. It is used to measure the strength of concrete (more specifically, its compressive strength). 1 megapascal is equal to 145psi (pounds per square inch). To put all of this into perspective, over 10 tonnes of force is needed to crush a coffee mug filled with concrete.

Superplasticizer, also known as a high-range water reducer, is a liquid product that’s added to concrete to allow water reduction of up to 30% while maintaining its workability. It also retards or slows down the curing process of concrete, which is vital because it allows more time to pour, vibrate, and finish. Using less water helps maintain the MPA (strength) while preventing the possibility of shrinkage crack.

Set retarder is a product (admixture) that is normally added to concrete at the batch plant (supplier) to slow down the curing time of concrete. It is especially used during the summer season to counteract the high temperatures. When used correctly, this product can make all the difference.

An accelerator is a product (admixture) that’s considered the opposite of a set retarder. In other words, it causes concrete to set faster. Due to its nature, an accelerator is commonly used during the cold seasons to allow the concrete to cure within a reasonable amount of time.

When concrete is curing, what’s really going on is a chemical reaction called hydration. The water added plays a key role by activating the cement and forming a paste (glue) that holds everything together. But, the water does not stay when the concrete dries. Instead, it evaporates. Since concrete is made of around 15% water by volume, it shrinks when the water evaporates. This is one of the main causes of concrete cracking.

If not enough water is added, concrete becomes too stiff to form the desired shape, which in our case, is a tank. On the other hand, too much water will reduce its strength and increase shrinkage.

Higher MPA is achieved by adding more cement and therefore more water to make it workable. Since more water leads to higher shrinkage, especially in hot weather conditions, a higher MPA is ideal. However, this is not always achievable depending on the temperature and location.

Vibration is the process that expels trapped air from freshly placed concrete, which increases the density and strength significantly. It is an integral part of building a concrete tank and other structures.

Excessive vibration will segregate concrete, which means the heavier aggregate (rock) will sink to the bottom, leaving only sand and water (slurry) at the top. Under vibrating has the opposite effect. It leaves air pockets (bubbles) in the concrete. If vibrating can be done while keeping what’s mentioned above to a minimum, a quality concrete tank can be produced.

Concrete is known for its compressive strength, which is the ability to withstand being crushed, but not so much for its tensile strength. Concrete can become incredibly strong in both aspects once it’s combined with steel bars and mesh. This is a vital process in building a quality concrete tank.
